Numerical reasoning
Numerical questions examine practical arithmetic and the ability to reason with quantities under time pressure. Expect skills such as percentages, ratios, averages, sequences and short word problems.
- Practise mental arithmetic and fraction–percentage equivalents.
- Estimate before calculating so impossible options disappear quickly.
- Translate word problems into one short operation before touching the numbers.
Verbal reasoning
Verbal questions reward precise word knowledge and fast relationship recognition. Common families include analogies, vocabulary, sentence completion and identifying how two words are connected.
- State the relationship in a short sentence before checking options.
- Use grammar and contrast words to narrow sentence-completion choices.
- Do not invent a rare meaning when a direct relationship is available.
Logical reasoning
Logical questions ask what must follow from a rule or pattern. The major trap is importing real-world assumptions that the question never supplied.
- Separate what must be true from what could be true.
- Use a tiny diagram or symbol when the wording contains several conditions.
- Test a suspected pattern against every available step, not only the first two.
Spatial reasoning
Spatial questions use shapes, rotations, reflections and visual sequences. Progress comes from tracking one transformation at a time rather than comparing the entire figure at once.
- Choose an anchor feature such as a dot, corner or shaded region.
- Check rotation separately from reflection.
- Track changes in position, count, direction and shading in a fixed order.
How to practise the mix
Start with topic-level practice until the core method is reliable. Then mix the four areas so your brain must switch methods, as it will in the live assessment. Finally, use full timed tests to combine content knowledge with pacing decisions.
An error log should record the question family, the cause of the mistake and the faster method you will use next time. That converts each error into a reusable rule.
